"Following the Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark decision in Ahluwalia v Ahluwalia, family lawyers must be prepared to recognize, assess, and respond to tort claims arising from family violence in separation and divorce matters. This program will give lawyers the practical foundation they need to navigate this evolving area with confidence. Esteemed faculty will examine:

the new tort of intimate partner violence
torts related to family violence such as assault, battery, intentional infliction of mental distress, and public disclosure of private facts/revenge porn
the strategic considerations that arise when tort claims intersect with family law proceedings
Through a practice-focused lens, the program will address screening obligations, causes of action, limitation periods, parties and notice, pleadings, damages and evidentiary requirements, and releases. Attendees will leave with practical tools, guidance on issue-spotting, and a stronger framework for identifying, advancing, and defending tort claims in family law matters."
